Bungie and Microsoft sent over a fact sheet for Halo Reach, and we thought you might be interested in it. The shooter’s multiplayer beta is now confirmed for a May 3 launch. “Halo: Reach,” developed exclusively for Xbox 360 by acclaimed developer Bungie, is the blockbuster prequel to the best-selling Xbox franchise of all time. It represents the culmination of Bungie’s 10 years of experience crafting groundbreaking “Halo” games that have raised expectations for what can be achieved in a video game. In “Halo: Reach,” players experience the fateful moments that forged the “Halo” legend. It’s the story of Noble Team, a squad of heroic Spartan soldiers, and their...

Fable III to have no HUD

News image

Peter Molyneux’s confirmed at X10 that there will be no health bar and no HUD in Fable III. The news is what the Lionhead boss feared people would be “pissed” about. He insisted the RPG would be taking cues from recent action titles, with enviromental graphic changes showing you how close you are to being dead. “Look at the screen! It’s completely clean,” said Molyneux, speaking at a presentation of the game, watched by Wired. “Why do we need the fucking health bar,” he further added. Fable III is due out this holiday season for Xbox 360.

PS3 Torne DVR has trophy support

News image

Sony’s released a fact-sheet on its new DVR for Japan, known as Torne, which reveals it’ll get trophy support. One instance of support for the service, would be if you were to watch the final episode of a long-running season of a TV show – you would get a trophy known as “Master of Final Episodes”, according to this week’s Famitsu. No extra details on how trophy support would work for the DVR, were revealed. In case you haven’t heard, Torne is pretty much what PlayTV is for Europe, only for Japan. • Full High Vision Viewing and Recording • EPG Compatibility • Subtitle Broadcast Compatibility • Dual language...

Wii sales jump by 60% for Q4

News image

Nintendo has confirmed that sales for the Wii has jumped by 60% for Q4, also stating that it was the best-selling home console of last week. The company also said it was pleased with how the black Wii, which was released two weeks ago, was performing at retail, with sales doubling week-on-week. “Of course it would be wrong to attribute all of this to Black Wii as we’re all starting to see a natural peak season uplift on all hardware,” said Nintendo’s Rob Lowe. “But we have been really pleased with Wii’s performance over the last couple of weeks and the new Black Wii has certainly contributed to that. In...

Blizzard says Cataclysm will “shake up” WoW

News image

Blizzard production director J.Allen Brack has said that those expecting just an update to World of Warcraft with Cataclysm should be prepared for a “shake up”. “We look at game development as an iterative process, and we’re continually polishing World Of Warcraft and building on what we’ve done in the past,” Brack told MCV (via CVG). “Just to give you one example, Cataclysm gave us an opportunity to go back to the game’s original zones and update the dramatically. “Cataclysm is also shaking up the game in other ways, with new features and races added, altered landscapes, new zones, new professions, new dungeons and new raids, to ensure the game...

Sony 'no longer playing catch up'
Written by Skar    Wednesday, 08 July 2009 10:35    PDF Print E-mail

Eric Lempel, SCEA’s director of PSN operations, has said that the service is no longer playing catch up with Xbox Live.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of ‘catch up’ [with XBL] any more. In some cases, I think we’ve got more, and we’ve got some other things they don’t have,” he told Industry Gamers.

“In terms of strengths, of course we’re still free, and we’re giving you a lot for free. It’s not just free online gaming, but we’ve got PlayStation Home, which is a massive community and application that’s totally free to use. I think there’s a lot we’re doing that in some cases they’re not doing, and I don’t see a lot of things they’re doing that we’re not.”

Lempel also elaborated that Sony did not want to go the Apple route with various software options, especially for PSP.

“Right now our free catalog consists of demos, wallpapers, themes and videos about games. I don’t think we want to degrade the experience you get from a PSP. Because [iPhone] is not a gaming-centric device, I think a user picks it up and says, ‘This is kind of dumb, but I don’t care because I know this device wasn’t intended for games’…. we don’t want to see a bunch of little things that don’t quite make sense or provide a good experience because I think that takes away from what the device is intended for.”

Just for reference purposes only, the amount of people that purchased an iPhone amounted to 3.79 million in quarter one of 2009 alone, which represented 123 percent unit growth over the year-ago quarter.
